Bun with Release Instructions
The following steps will take you through the process of a Bun with Release using Hare Do.
Mist the Hair
Mist the hair with water, apply more to the ends.
Comb the hair smooth.
Extend the Hare Do lengthwise and slide the excess fabric (equally) to both ends forming rosettes.
Tips:
When first practicing bobby pins help eliminate droops and sags along the sides.
Always bobby pin layers and flyaway hair.
Dominant Hand
Dominant Hand Instructions:
The instructions below are written for a left handed person.
Reverse the hands in the following steps below if you are right handed.
Divide the hair in two sections straight across the top of both ears.
Don't let Go!
Hold this top section (ponytail) with the left hand.
Right Handed:
Don't let Go!
Hold the ponytail in the right hand.
Hold the Hare Do
Hold the Hare Do in the right hand and slide a rosette end underneath the ponytail.
Don't let Go!
The left hand holding the ponytail grabs the rosette end (as one).
Fold Hare Do in Half
The right hand folds the Hare Do in half laying the two rosettes on top of each another beside the ponytail.
This hand grabs the two rosettes off the ponytail and places them sideways on the right side of the head.
Important:
Keep holding the rosette end as the left hand releases the ponytail and combs the hair smooth
between the two strands.
When finished grasp the folded end with the left hand.
Hold the Two Ends
Hold the two ends as you keep the Hare Do strands tight against the back of the head.
Important:
Make sure the hair lays smooth between the strands before starting.
Right Handed:
The folded end is held in the right hand as your other hand holds the rosette end.
Twist in the Same Direction
Both hands twist the folded and rosette ends in the same direction (underhand) 1 time clamping the hair.
Twisting Directions:
Folded End:
Form a loop (hole): The thumb pushes the bottom of the loop as the index finger pulls the top open.
Rosette End:
The thumb pushes the bottom rosette as the index fingertip pulls the top rosette forming a handle to twist.
Retwisting Directions
Retwist the folded and rosette ends in the same direction (underhand) 1 time again.
Retwisting Directions:
Folded End:
The middle fingertip holds and pulls the top of the loop.
Move the thumb pushing the bottom of the loop as the index fingertip pulls the top loop open again.
Rosette End:
The middle fingertip holds and pulls the top rosette.
Move the thumb pushing the bottom rosette as the index fingertip pulls the top rosette again.
Tips:
The two ends make handles to twist.
Twisting with three fingers takes practice.
Slide Outward
Both hands slide the two ends away from the head (outward).
Hair Length | Outward Direction |
---|---|
Short (5" or less) | straight down (floor) |
Middle of neck | down |
Lower neck | down / back |

Important:
As you slide, maintain tension on the hair by twisting both ends underhand one-eighth of a turn.
Slide the Hare Do as low as you can reach (down and back).
Tips:
Form a ponytail first to slide upward.
The higher you lift the hair (upward) the weight of the hair has a tendency to sag.
Keep Sliding
Keep sliding both ends away from the head (outward).
Important:
As you slide, maintain tension on the hair by twisting both ends underhand one-eighth of a turn.
The lower you slide (down and back) the easier and smoother the hair rolls.
Keep Sliding
Keep sliding and STOP with a quarter of a twist at halfway to three-quarters of the hair length.
Hair Length | Outward Direction |
---|---|
Short (5" or less) | 2" from end |
Middle of neck | 2" to 4" from end |
Lower neck | 1/4 from end |
Shoulder blade | 1/4 from end |
Middle of back | 1/2 from end |
Waist or longer | 1/2 from end |

Slide the Hare Do as low as you can reach (down and back).
Twist in the Same Direction

Twisting Directions:
Important:
As you twist, gently pull back on the hair applying tension for a smooth hair roll.
Retwisting Directions
Retwist both ends in the same direction (underhand) 1 time rolling the hair.
Retwisting Directions:

Keep twisting both ends and STOP when the hair is rolled tight against the back of the head.
Hair Length | Outward Direction |
---|---|
Short (5" or less) | 2 to 3 |

Lower neck | 4 to 5 |
Shoulder blade | 5 to 6 |
Middle of back | 6 to 9 |
Waist or longer | 9 to 12 |
Layered | 5 to 10 |
Important:
One to three extra twists for a more firm roll.
(Personal Preference)
Three extra twists for thick heavy hair.
If neck hair is pulling unroll the hair just one-half twist.
Make a Circular Motion
Both hands lift the Hare Do ends up and around in a circular motion on the backside of the head.
Cross the Rosette Ends
Lay the rosette end against the hair with the folded end crossing on top of it forming an "X".
Hold the Crossed Strands
Don't let Go!
The left hand fingertips and thumb hold the crossed Hare Do strands (as one).
Recommended:
Short unrolled hair sticks out through the Bun.
Gather them with your fingers and place behind the "X" (hold as one).
It's easier to tuck them in now than later.
Keep Holding
Keep holding the crossed strands.
The right hand bends the tip of the folded end toward the head.
Push the Tip
Keep bending towards the head and finish pushing the tip up through and wrapping all the way around the Hare Do crossed strands.
Important:
Pinch the tip against the strands locking the Bun in place.
The folded end forms a knot that holds and supports the Bun.
Amazing!
Let go and give your hands a break!
Untwist the Rosettes Ends
Hold the Bun steady as you untwist the two rosettes to straighten them.
